Thoughts from my daily grind

I started using Grammarly to improve my written English

I am a freelance software developer from Sri Lanka. I am good with my English even though it is not my mother tongue. I do a lot of daily reading, and almost all my film and TV are English. However, as every English teacher has pointed out, I make many spelling and grammar mistakes.

I got my first computer in 2000. One of the best things about the computer was the inclusion of Microsoft Office, which had spelling and grammar correction inbuilt. For years I would channel almost all my writings to MS Word for corrections. This changed when I moved away from Windows to Ubuntu Linux 10 years ago.

Last year I got my first Macintosh - an iMac 2019. I was planning to upgrade my Office 365 subscription to include Microsoft Office desktop applications. That is when I received an UpWork invitation for a job posting. I instantly noticed Grammarly in action when I was writing the cover letter. I was impressed. Impressed enough to buy a subscription the same day.

Packages

For individuals, Grammarly comes with a free and premium tire. The free tier includes some basic assistant, including but not limited to spelling correction. The premium tire will offset you $140 / yr and will come with a boatload of features. Grammarly does not come cheap, but my research suggests it is one of the best solutions in the market.

In addition to its individual tier, Grammarly has 2 more offerings. One is for business, and the other is for educational institutes.

Conclusion

Grammarly makes spelling, grammatical and punctuational, formality and readability corrections effortless. It is a good tool to have in your toolbox regardless of your English competency level.
