Civilisation VI - iMac 27 Radeon RX580
I was a big fan of the Civilization V game, which was ten years ago. Recently I decided to try Civilization VI on my Apple iMac. This renewed interest is because I came across the game in the Apple App Store.
Availability on Apple Devices
The game was available on the Apple App Store for both iOS and macOS. I was curious to try it on my iPad, but I believe that a large screen and mouse is the best way to play a strategy game like Civilization.
Price
The App Store priced the game at $59.99. There was only one rating, and I decided to do some research if the game is playable in my 27" 2019 iMac with an RX580 graphics card. While I couldn't find the specific information, I learnt that the Steam store had it on sale. When I last checked, it was available for $11.24.
Performance
I have a Core i9 9900KF 64GB RAM setup with a Radeon Pro 580X graphics card. It opened full screen with 4K resolution but on medium quality. But I could hear the fans working hard. That made me uncomfortable. So I play with 1080p resolution. The fan is still running hard but not too crazy.
I will update this post with some FPS values under different conditions when I have time.
If your question is if the game is playable, the game is most definitely playable.
No Audio at Menu and Game Play
In my first attempt, I installed the game on an external USB 3 SSD drive. The installation went smooth, but there was no audio from the main menu onward. I tried "verify the integrity of game files" and some other solutions suggested on posts dating back to Civilization V with no luck.
Since I was tired, I uninstalled Civilization VI and Stem. I reinstalled it on the primary M2 SSD, and the audio is now working.
Conclusion
Overall I am happy about the game. First, I got it for a discount price, and then it works with decent performance. I didn't buy the iMac for gaming. But I think the occasional game wouldn't hurt.
