I get irked when hair brushes my ears, meaning the hair line around my ear usually is kept short, especially when I am in stress. For this, I generally visit the saloon every 3 weeks. For an emergency, I have a Phillips Norelco Multi Groomer 7000 series to trim which has come handy in late night debugging sessions.

Since April I have avoided the saloon. I am not particularly fond of the saloon. I have questions about the cleanliness of even some of the best saloons in Colombo. On top of that I have noticed almost every time I catch a flue, there was a saloon visit couple days back. Especially true if the barber is exhibiting flue like symptoms. Once the China Wuhan virus started sweeping through the world, I took the decision to avoid the saloon until a vaccination is available. Health was only part of the equation. Since I was a child, I really loved cutting hair. Arguably I am still that child!

Yesterday was my 6th DIY Hair Cut. Given I'd done 5, they went fairly well (except the second time when I became too ambitious) I went lax in to the bathroom with my hair clipper, set the spacer to 22mm (max) and started trimming. How ever I had not set the spacer properly. It was only sitting in one of its railings. As the pressure applied I believe it dropped down to about 5 or worst 3mm 🥴. This resulted an unrecoverable loss of hair and I had to resort to a very short and boring cut, like the days when I went to St Annes' College - Kurunegala.

The problem is, my hair is little rigid. If it's short, it tends to stand up defying even hair creams and gels. Next month is going to be a nightmare.

If you want to DIY your hair, first consider going to the saloon 😂. Otherwise get your significant other, sibling or friend to do it. If you really need to do it your self, make sure you have a mirror setup so that you can see what you cut. The first day I used a video stream - my phone streaming a video to my iPad which also works but too much of a hassle and didn't ever use again.

Will this make me go to the saloon? My policy dictates 3 screwups in rapid succession to discontinue a personal project. Lets see how the next 2 months go.
