Import restrictions hit aquarium fish

While "sex" may be some thing to Google in Sri Lanka, it ain't rocket science in the animal world. 2 years ago when I setup my first fish tank with 8 Gold Fish, 3 months later one started laying eggs. In the right circumstances, fish would breed and lay eggs and some of it will hatch. Simple right? Imagine my surprise when I heard that we were importing fish. I thought we would be an industry leading country exporting aquarium fish.

Following the death of some of my fish, I decided to go to East West Aquarium. It is my de facto stop all my aquarium needs. It came highly recommended by the family who gifted me their 115 gallon fish tank. According to Google Maps (reviews) and few friends in to the hobby East West Aquarium seems to be the best place that has a good selection of fish and other aquarium related utilities.

They were low on fancy Gold Fish. A friend of mine told about this to me as well. So I asked why there was a shortage of fish and if and when new fish stocks will arrive.

He told me that they import most of their fish. Most of them come from Singapore and China. With the China Wuhan Virus pandemic wrecking havoc across the globe in general and Sri Lanka in particular the government instructed the banks to restrict the issuance of US currency for imports.

I think needing to import fish is a disgrace. I am not sure why it is not done in a large scale. It just happened in my tank. How hard could it be?

I heard that there needs to be certain temperature for the fish to breed and lay eggs. I believe some where along the road from Colombo to Nuwara-Eliya/Badulla/Bandarawella will have the right conditions for a fish farm.

Any how the matter at hand is that fish imports are impacted by the currency situation. According to a staff member they might get more stocks in about a month. This also lines up with some news reports I came across where the government said import restrictions will be relaxed.

So I will wait. I don't like the timeline. It's after the new year and I fear there will be an explosion of COVID19 cases the way idiots go shopping irrespective of health guidelines.
